operation knock-down drag-out: week 11.

this week of the bathroom project just so happened to coincide with a "recovery" week of the p90x program. Mark decided to take advantage of this, and turned it into a full fledged "off" week instead. this way, he was able to make good use of his evening hours during the week, not have to spend any extra time or energy working out, and really was able to make some impressive progress on the bathroom.

first up: finishing the beadboard ceiling. all the calculations and measurements that Mark did were to ensure that the beadboard would be nice and square and centered once it was installed. this meant that the 4x8 panel needed to be trimmed on all four sides before it could be installed.

as far as the actual installation went, we used adhesive followed by some finishing nails. Mark applied the adhesive directly to the ceiling instead of putting it on the back of the actual beadboard panel. this meant that there was WAY less chance of us making a mess of ourselves or anything else that we might have accidentally bumped into as we maneuvered the panel into place on the ceiling. and yes, we did manage to make this work as a two person job, although i think having an extra set of hands might have been helpful, if a little bit of a tight squeeze in this tiny space.

based on the placement of the joists in the ceiling, there wound up being nothing solid on the short ends of the room to nail the beadboard into. to keep the beadboard as flush to the ceiling as possible and keep the ends from flopping around, the two short pieces of quarter-round trim had to pull double duty: not only would they be decorative and pretty, but they would also be nailed into the 1x8 trim boards to help hold the ends of the beadboard up and in place.

just in case you were wondering, this is NOT the correct way to install mitered quarterround trim pieces. its not that the miter is cut the wrong direction, its just that these ones got installed upside down. whoops.

if you happen to be in a rush, it is very possible that this could happen to you. if this is the case, be very glad you chose to attach your trim with just nails instead of with glue. this will make removing your newly installed trim pieces slightly less rage-inducing.

we left the upsidedown trim pieces in place until the glue on the beadboard had dried, then Mark figured out a way to remove them without damaging any of the other ceiling pieces. this was key, as it meant that we had only wasted a $4 piece of trim and a couple hours instead of trashing the entire ceiling.

once we had that whole 'which way is up' issue resolved, the rest of the trim pieces went in without any issues. Mark chose to wear gloves to help minimize the amount of dirt and fingerprints he would have to clean up and/or paint over later.

with all the trim pieces in place, Mark moved on to the task of verrrry carefully cutting away the beadboard around the exhaust fan. he decided it would be easier to do this after the beadboard was on the ceiling, instead of cutting a giant hole based on measurements alone and then hoping that it fit right once we put it up there. he's a thinker that husband of mine.

he made this look so easy. even so, i couldnt watch. there were just too many things that could have gone wrong. lost fingers, a bad cut, a slip and fall... it was way less stressful for me to just be in the other room. close enough to be there within seconds of a big crash, but far enough away to protect both our sanity.

with a few finishing touches: nail holes filled and touch up painted, all gaps caulked, TA-DA! we have ourselves a beautiful new beadboard ceiling!

but wait! theres more!

Mark also installed a weird looking partial piece of baseboard real quick-like. why just that one piece? why is it cut so funny? why was he in such a hurry that he needed to dry the caulk with my hair dryer?

well, that one piece of baseboard was the only one that was needed before he could...

*drumroll please*

...install the vanity!

oh, and he put up the lovely new light fixture too. sorry about the total lack of in-process pictures. i was busy making the most of the gorgeous weekend weather to do some much-needed-pre-winter yard work (mowing and leaf mulching, cleaning out some flower beds, and trimming a few bushes) and since our lawnmower is broken, this was especially exhausting and i needed all my energy to make it through the entire yard, and i also didnt want to take any unnecessary picture breaks because i didnt want to run out of daylight.

but since mark was on a roll this week, (and also because he needed to return his uncles tile saw soon) he decided to take on the last tile-related project: the backsplash and sidesplash.

the installation was very similar to what we've seen before:
- lay out your pattern, cut your tiles, and mix the mud (thinset this time)

- spread the mud onto the wall with the notched trowel. use a trowel with smaller notches for smaller tiles.

- press your tiles into the mud. clean up the extra mud from around the tiles and out of all the grout lines.

- use little blue wedgie spacers to keep the tiles from sagging down the wall while the mud sets.

- jump up and down with excitement and joy at your beautiful backsplash!

seriously. look. how. stinkin'. pretty. this tile was not part of the original "design scheme" for the bathroom, and i am absolutely thrilled with how well it matches and complements the wall color and also pulls in the grayish color of the vanity. if i didnt tell you, would you even guess that it was purchased late in the game and straight off the shelf at the Depot? i love it so hard.

all the vanity needs to be called complete is some plumbing and doorknobs, both of which are things we have in our possession, and are itching to install just as soon as the tile is grouted and ready to roll.

only one more big thing left to purchase and install in the bathroom: the toilet. i did some research, and i thought we had one all picked out, but now there is debate between the members of my household: round bowl vs. elongated. a few people chimed in with their opinions on facebook, but since most of them sided with me, Mark decided that we need more responses in order to make an informed decision.

so what say you, internets? round or elongated?

meal plan monday: nov 12.

whats this? another boring, pictureless, lame post about boring, lame, pictureless meals? yes. yes it is. and you know what? i dont even care today. today, i just want to give up. i thought this whole meal-planning thing would get easier with time. you know, practice makes perfect right? well i've been planning a weekly menu for the past tenandahalf months and it has not gotten any easier for me to come up with tasty, healthy, EASY meal ideas than it was at the very beginning.

maybe i'm thinking too hard? maybe i'm limiting myself with a too-strict definition of what is healthy? maybe i just haven't gotten organized yet? maybe i just really really dont want to go to the grocery store again? i'm not exactly sure. but what i do know is that its kind of a small miracle that i came up with anything at all for this week's meals.

Monday: citrus herb chicken and roasted potatoes.
Tuesday: crock pot chicken noodle soup. (recipe)
Wednesday: tilapia with rice and a veggie.
Thursday: veggie omelettes.
Friday: i declare a date night.
Saturday: crock pot meatball subs. (recipe)
Sunday: chicken salad.  (recipe-ish)

operation knock-down drag-out: weeks 9&10.

ok. so i obviously didnt post my weekly bathroom renovation update last week. it wasnt because there was nothing to report, but mostly because all of my time and brainspace was being used up worrying about what to do and who to call if a tree fell on our house or our basement filled with water or if we woke up under 4 feet of snow. forgive me? kthanks.

so first off: let's play a little catch-up and take a quick look back at all the un-dones of two weeks ago:

- the tub/shower surround: was tiled but ungrouted. is currently tiled and grouted. waiting on shelves, soap dish, caulk, and fixtures.

- the new exhaust fan: was installed without power. is currently installed, fully wired and operational!

- the to-paint list: was a long list that was mostly unfinished. currently the walls, door, and the ceiling are done-zo. waiting on the shelves which still need a second coat of white.

- the towel hooks: were barely started. are currently painted. waiting on a finalized plan of how to put them all together and get them hung on the wall.

moving on... we've kept busy these past two weeks. the primary project we've been working towards is the beadboard ceiling. Mark spent most of week 9 measuring, re-measuring, calculating, and planning the ceiling.

seriously, there were a lot of calculations involved.

all those mathematical gymnastics proved to be useful and necessary, since everything has so far gone up pretty much on the first try and without any major issues. we are basically following the same method as over at the House of Smiths, which is where the beadboard ceiling idea originally came from. the frame around the perimeter of the room is made of 1x8s that were trimmed to ensure that the beadboard area of the ceiling would be nice and square and centered and easy to cut to size.

we attached the frame boards to the ceiling with a squiggly bead of adhesive and then shot a few nails into the studs. in the event of missing studs, we used screws and anchors in place of the nails.

i didnt just take pictures, i helped too. really.

as of right now, the frame is up on the ceiling and has been painted. the beadboard is almost cut to size, but the circular saw eats through batteries like you wouldnt believe, so we keep having to wait for them to recharge before we can finish trimming it all down to size. but once its ready to go, it should just be a matter of some liquid nails, some actual nails, and some quarter round trim and caulk, and the ceiling will be all finished and awesome.

the secondary project we tackled in the past two weeks, and definitely the more stressful of the two, was picking and procuring a vanity. this was not supposed to be a stressful thing. i picked my favorite vanity on our first trip to the Depot, way back when we were just in the hypothetical planning phase of this project. i liked the color, the style, the shelf on the bottom, the shape of the sink, everything about it. and Mark actually agreed. good. done. easy-peasy.

but it was too good to be true. based on its dimensions, installing this particular vanity would have required some pretty significant plumbing reconfiguration that did not fit into either our schedule or our budget. so it was back to the drawing board to find a vanity that would both look good in the room and be easy to install, without breaking the bank. turns out these criteria were more difficult to fulfill than we expected, especially when looking at in-stock vanities at our local big box stores. (if we were going to order something "custom" we would have had to do that weeks ago)

everything we found had some sort of deal breaker: too skinny, too pricey, too dark, too many installation issues, too fancy... it was like living with Goldilocks over here while we were vanity hunting, except the "just right" one was seemingly nowhere to be found.

just a few of the main contenders

but finally, Finally, FINALLY we picked one. which one? well, we finally landed on that one on the bottom right. it was the closest in design and color to our original favorite, seemed to be well constructed, and shouldnt have any installation issues since the back of it is wide open without any drawers or shelves to interfere with the plumbing. we liked it so much (and were so happy to have a winner) that we drove an extra half an hour to get it (twice!) because it wasnt carried at our local Depot.

we're still not sure if the color is 100% right. it's kind of a greige-ey color, (a hybrid of gray and beige) and changes pretty significantly based on the lighting. example: it looked pretty terrible and way too brown on saturday night, but was a perfectly awesome shade of gray on sunday morning when we bought it. (what? you didnt use your extra hour to make an early morning Depot run? lazy time wasters, the lot of you) we'll have to see it in the actual room before we can make the final decision on whether it will stay its original color, or get a coat or two of straight-up gray paint.

we still have to finish the ceiling and put up the vanity light before we move the actual vanity into the room to check the color, but we're quickly moving in that direction, and should hopefully know the fate of the vanity by this weekend. fingers crossed that it turns out to be perfect and awesome and we wont actually have to paint it, so we can just get this whole room done already and my sister will stop pricing port-a-john rentals for thanksgiving weekend...

*ohmigosh you guys... i just realized that the countdown at the end of these posts has been off by an entire week! sorry to mislead you all: turns out i was counting down to the wrong day and the fam is coming sooner than i thought! yay! the other good news is that this mistake was only made in the blog world and not in the real world, so Mark is still on schedule. trust me, he knows exactly how many days he has left to get this all done.

thankful in 2012.

1. step stools.
2. coffee creamer.
3. cell phones.
4. the ability to give.
5. friday phone dates.
6. forgiveness.
7. a warm house.
8. slippers.
9. my human alarm clock.
10. jeans on friday.

so: these first ten weren't super easy for me to come up with. i'm feeling a little conflicted about sharing my thanks today, because that part of my self that wants to please everyone and be open minded and politically correct doesn't want it to be seen as being too trivial. step stools and coffee creamer at the top of the list for this year? really? when so many people are thankful to have woken up this morning still breathing? well... yes.

the thing is, i am also thankful to be breathing today, but that wasnt the first thing that came to my mind as i started this list. i know in my heart that these lists aren't in order of importance, or by magnitude of my thankfulness, but i just have SO MUCH to be thankful for and i dont want to lose the feeling of gratitude at the little things like being able to help the hubs work on the bathroom ceiling because we own a step stool, or vanilla flavored coffee on a chilly morning in among the big things like life and love and health.

i might fall off that step stool tomorrow and curse its existence. but right here, right now, forever frozen in time and the internets, is proof that at one point i thought to myself "i am so glad to have that step stool in my life."

so at this point i guess it goes without saying that these november thankful lists that we do every year are not in any sort of meaningful order other than the random order my brain spits things out. so just keep that in mind as the month goes on so you are not tempted to become indignant that you all just got upstaged by a step stool.

meal plan...thursday? nov 1.

hello november!

wow, another new month has snuck up on me...creeping in behind all the dramatics of hurricanes and halloween and messing up my sense of time and space. how is it thursday already? where has this week gone? have we really been surviving on nothing but leftovers and protein shakes since saturday? whoops. i guess meal planning kind of slipped my mind, 'cause we had more important things to do, like hurricane-surviving, jack-o-lantern carving, and hot-pants-wearing!

surprisingly, our pumpkins got several compliments from trick-or-treaters this year, and a couple people even took pictures of their kids next to them!

surprisingly, my hot pants didnt get any compliments from trick or treaters.

i think life around here has finally calmed down enough this week to be just about back to normal, and i'm thinking i should probably venture out to the grocery store, unless i want to see just how long we can live on a dozen eggs and two heels of a loaf of bread. here's my best guess at a plan-ish for the rest of the week.

Monday: zuchinni, black bean, rice skillet. (didnt eat it last week)
Tuesday: leftover pulled pork for me, egg sandwich for mark.
Wednesday: omelettes.
Thursday: soup from a can.
Friday: turkey burgers.
Saturday: citrus herb chicken with roasted potatoes.
Sunday: community group football party!
